Cranial Osteopathy

Bendigo Osteo has a strong reputation for practicing Cranial Osteopathy. It is a specialised area of treatment and a clinical focus at our Clinic. Dr Matt, Dr Jeremy and Dr Merryn (Osteopaths) have practise in this subtler form of treatment and annually participate in Cranial and Biodynamic Training Courses in Australia and New Zealand with Osteopathic Studies.

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial Osteopathy works with the Primary Respiratory Mechanism of the body. The Primary Respiratory Mechanism is a breathing-like motion that is present through cells of the body. (Not just the head as the name might suggest).

Throughout life our body experiences a range of stresses, including physical, traumatic, emotional and nutritional. Your body works hard to remove these stresses, yet a lasting strain pattern might remain. These strain patterns can begin to disrupt the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM). This may result in reduced flexibility of muscles, ligaments and joints. Furthermore it may affects your body’s ability to adapt to further stresses and predisposing you to injury.

An Osteopath trained in cranial therapy’s goal is to identify these strains in the Primary Respiratory Mechanism that are preventing the expression of optimal health. Then using subtle touch and pressure, the Osteopath palpates the Primary Respiratory Mechanism. This gently assists the body to release any unwelcome strain and enables a state of health and balance to be restored.

At Bendigo Osteo, Cranial Osteopathy is most commonly used for treatment of persistent headaches/migraines, pregnancy/pelvic tension and stress induced muscular skeletal conditions such as digestive conditions. It is very common for people to seek cranial treatment when other forms of health care have been unable to assist.
Cranial Osteopathy is also primarily used to treat strain in babies after the trauma of birth and in young children. Both Dr Matt and Dr Merryn offer treatment for babies.

Whilst Cranial Osteopathy has been practised for years, there is a limited amount of published research available on its effectiveness.  We believe it’s effective, and so do our clients, but as with all medical intervention there is no guarantees but for more information see Osteopathy and Research.
