PRE AND POST NATAL CARE
Pregnant and live in Bendigo? Looking for an Osteopath to support you? We are here to help.
Your body undergoes a tremendous transition throughout the course of pregnancy and at Bendigo Osteo our aim is to assist women adapt to the musculoskeletal changes in their body. Thus supporting them towards optimal health for labour and post natal recovery.
When you become pregnant, hormones are released into your body that ‘relax’ the joints and ligaments in order to accommodate for the growing baby. These changes occurs especially in your lower back, buttock and pelvic region. Then as your pregnancy progresses, the extra weight creates a shift in your body’s centre of gravity and adds pressure to other regions of the body impacting your organs, joints, circulation, and posture.
This increase in mechanical stress to the body may result in pain, stiffness and tension. It is normal for a woman to experience back pain, sciatica, leg pain and cramps, swelling, heartburn, pelvis instability and pelvic pain (in the sacroiliac joint and the pubic symphysis), hip pain and groin pain.
So how can a Osteopath help during pregnancy?
Taking a holistic approach to care, our aim is to decrease this discomfort and promote flexibility, good posture and strength during your pregnancy.
Our Osteopaths are particular concerned with pelvic alignment and the tension in the tissues surrounding this region. Our goal is to promote optimal opportunity for correct positioning of the baby and freedom of movement for the mother ready for labour.
We are also available for post natal care. Even when labour goes well, lasting mechanical strain patterns can result in a range of problems like pelvic and lower back pain and pelvic floor weakness. It is also common to have shoulder, upper back and arm pain associated with breastfeeding.
Pregnancy and labour are a huge strain on a woman’s body, yet it is well designed for it and it is always a delight to partner in this process. We have two female Osteopaths who have a special interest in treating pregnancy, Dr Merryn and Dr Maddy. Our male staff are equally committed and experienced in supporting woman during pregnancy.
